Curated by Deborah Ugoretz & Yevgeniy Fiks, Emes/Truth features works that interrogate the notion of truth. The Opening Event on December 17 features a performance by Yiddish singer Sarah Myerson with Ilya Shneyveys. Viewing hours are December 18, 19, 22-25 and 30 from 9AM-5PM and on December 26 from 9:30AM – 12 noon.

YIDDISH: FOR UNITY OR DIVISION? 🗣️+🎵

Alternate visions for Yiddish’s future were promulgated by eminent Brooklyn Jewish leaders during the tumultuous 1920s. Abraham Shiplacoff was editor of the Forverts, a successful politician known as the “Jewish Eugene V. Debs” and a champion for the continuity of Yiddish language & culture.

Meanwhile, Rabbi Alexander Lyons of Congregation Beth Elohim was lauded as the “Dean of Brooklyn Rabbis” and promoted Jewish assimilation based in the Reform movement. Program features Chana Pollack (The Forward) and historian/activist Dylan Yeats in a discussion moderated by Raul Rothblatt with a performance by the Rothblatt Family Klezmer Band.

At the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library Event Center, 455 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. Admission is free, but you need to reserve a ticket here.
Brazilian singer/songwriter and cultural producer Nicole Borger in featured in this NYC-iteration of the Brazilian Kleztival with guitarist Oren Neiman, which will blend Jewish music with Brazilian Bossa Nova. The program is inspired by our city’s history– in 1654, a ship with 23 Jews from Brazil docked at the shores of a small village, then called New Amsterdam, who established themselves there and helped to create the city which we know today as New York.

The evening will feature Hazzan Breitzer, Hazzan Sarah Myerson, Hazzan Jeff Warschauer, singer M. Miller, multi-instrumentalist Ilya Shneyveys and violinist and singer Deborah Strauss. This will be a warm and wonderful Friday night service with very special musical settings for the occasion. Absolutely all are welcome! Be there!
